Remotely Hosted Mailing List Providers

Hosting your newsletter on a remote mailing list provider has a few advantages. Some Website hosts don't allow mailing lists on their servers, and with good reason.. excessive bandwidth usage and potential spam complaints are enough to keep even the best hosts cautious when it comes to mass email. Another advantage to using a remote newsletter service for your list is that if you change web hosts, your newsletter list (ie. your list of hard earned subscribers) will stay intact. I also find that since all of these require double opt-in, and they make that quite clear, that any complaints are a lot easier to take care of. (And yes, even double opt-in, totally 100% spam free newsletters still will get the occasional complaint.)

Bravenet
You can either paste a form on your site so visitors can join your list or, you maintain the list and only you can add email addresses to the list. This keeps the list private. You can at any time delete unwanted email addresses and list members can unsubscribe if they want to. You can also choose to receive notification by email when someone subscribes or unsubscribes from your list. Complete with spell checking and other features! They offer tons of other free resources for your website here as well!

FreeLists
The biggest bonus in my opinion for this service is that they don't add forced advertisements to your mailings. They offer both news and announcement lists, searchable web-based list archives and a few other handy features. Very simple interface and it is easy to set up.

Your Mailing List Provider
A rather customizable mailing list for your website. Their free version is restricted in some ways, cannot import subscribers, can send only one newsletter per day, max message size is 40 k and 1000 subscribers maximum. They also do ad advertisements to your mailing so support the free service. As for their features, you can collect other info besides just an email address, you can download your subscriber database at any time (Very important in case you ever want to move your newsletter!), your choice of sending as plain text, HTML or "multipart" newsletters and all sent newsletters are archived.

Topica
I've used this newsletter host at another site I own. It was years ago now, so it may have changed a bit but as I recall it was pretty easy to use. They offer both regular newsletters as well as discussion groups, a personalized "MyTopica page" to easily keep track of your news lists and those you've subscribed to and handy archives. Ads are added to your outgoing email to help pay for the service.
